Perhaps it wasn't the best time to be in a next-goal-wins situation, yet the Cobourg Cougars prevailed over the Markham Waxers on Monday.
Cobourg had trailed four times before the Central Canadian Hockey League junior A game went into overtime.
Derek Foote's goal 4:16 into the extra frame, though, gave the Cougars a 5-4 win over the visiting Waxers at the Cobourg Memorial Arena.
Cobourg trailed 1-0 at one point in the first period, 2-1 and 3-2 in the second and 4-3 in the third.
Team captain Matt Diminie said the Cougars' win in Lindsay last Friday was a big boost and enabled them not to panic against Markham.
"Our confidence is starting to get back so we knew being down one goal wasn't a big deal," said Diminie, who, in the first period Monday night, scored his sixth goal in the past three games. "We knew we had the talent to get back into it."
Diminie's brother, James Diminie, scored in the second period to tie the game for a second time.
Adam Place, who leads Cobourg with 17 goals, scored twice in the third.
Foote's goal came seven seconds after the Cougars had killed off a minor penalty, spending it at a 4-on-3 disadvantage.
It was a much-needed win for the 10th and last place Cougars, which trail second-place Markham by 10 points. The Cougars need to be in the top eight to make the playoffs.
"We know in order for us to move up in the standings we're going to have to start beating teams like that," Matt Diminie said.
