Diminie's in a groove for Cougars
November 18th, 2009

Forward James Diminie was as baffled as anyone when he didn't score a goal through the first 13 games of this regular season for the Cobourg Cougars.

"It's not like I wasn't shooting. I was getting chances," he said after Monday night's home game, a 7-2 win by the Cougars over the Peterborough Stars in Central Canadian Hockey League junior A play.

Now, he says, "the bounces just seem to be going my way right now."

James Diminie scored twice and assisted on a goal by his brother Matt Diminie.

After being limited to just two assists during those first 13 contests, James Diminie hasn't registered a point per game, but he does have 11 points in the past 11 games.

"I'm getting a lot more comfortable playing with a bunch of guys, no matter what the lines are. I've just started to get in a groove and it's working for me," he said. "It felt good because I started off kinda, well not kinda, I started off real slow but I'm starting to get more confidence in each game."

His line with his brother and Brandon Couto was clicking well Monday night as it was responsible for five of the seven goals. Matt Diminie, the team captain, scored twice more to stretch his goal-scoring streak to four games. He has scored eight goals in the last four games.

Matt Diminie also chipped in with a pair of assists. Couto had a goal and an assist and Derek Foote and Aaron Duggan also scored.

It was Cobourg's third straight victory and a much-needed two points. The Cougars are now just one point behind Peterborough in the standings, but the Stars have five games in hand.

"That was our third in a row so now we can use that as momentum and just keep building on it," James Diminie said. "We've just got to do simple things, shoot, pass, hit because we've got guys that do each thing well and we've got great goaltending."

Tonight, the Cougars (9-14-2) face a tough task when they host an inter-locking game against the Toronto Jr. Canadiens (15-8-2) who sit third in the CCHL's West Division. Game time is 7 p. m. at the Memorial Arena.

"Things are going our way right now, so we're not scared to play anyone," Diminie said. "We know we can beat anyone in this league."

Cobourg will then meet Peterborough again on the road Friday night.
